Review:
This movie is a mix of several genres (drama, adventure, sci-fi, comedy, romantic tragedy), as well as art house films to experimental cerebral achieved the status of a commercial blockbuster. In my opinion it worked for the most part, but found the large mainstream audience is the biggest challenge that must be met (at this point, before the wide release). Imagine taking six short (but big budget) films with a story and a different director and combines them into an anthology feature, united by a common theme and cast of actors in different roles, and then edit things out of order. The nested narrative of the book has been re-arranged for the film to reach a visual medium, and after six first introduced to the world, not hard to keep track of who's who, what's what and where and when. Honestly, it was a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination for Best Editing - worked very well considering the challenges made to flow continuously. Cinematography, set design and art, musical scores and performances range from good to great. Make-up in some cases creating a disturbance (a Korean woman turned into a red-haired Caucasian, Hugo Weaving as the buxom female nurses), but it adds some fun to the experience. Theres sm rg sbord material here for most people:? Human drama, mystery, violence, sex, adventure, comedy funny, bleak and the occasional sci-fi romance (both gay and heterosexual). Its six movies for the price of one! Just be prepared to spend almost 3 hours in the chair and suffered a bit of whiplash as a transition can be frantic at times, with a cliff-hanger going on simultaneously. Like a good roller coaster, has lulls and reeds. Some may find the ending a little unconventional, whiny or anti-climax. But there is no denying this is a big, expensive gamble on the Wachowskis and their manufacturers. Hopefully it will achieve the kind of success they had with the first Matrix and Speed Racer is not the fate of the abyss. (PS I saw the film at its world premiere at TIFF.)
